The Hypothetical Chilean Mine Shaft.

Saturday, October 23, 2010

Going back to PR/Advertising class Friday, the look on Bre's face was just priceless as KL pretty much asked her, "who lives, and who dies?" in a hypothetical exercise regarding a faulty Chilean mine shaft.

I was hoping Bre was going to answer the question with a direct quote by Commander Spock from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan:

Anyways, I love hypothetical scenarios.  I have listed some here that I found in Chuck Klosterman IV: A Decade of Curious People and Dangerous Ideas.  It's seriously a must read.  Here are a few for you to chew on this weekend:

Let us assume a fully grown, completely healthy Clydesdale horse has his hooves shackled to the ground while his head is held in place with thick rope. He is conscious and standing upright, but completely immobile. And let us assume that--for some reason--every political prisoner on earth (as cited by Amnesty International) will be released from captivity if you can kick this horse to death in less than twenty minutes. You are allowed to wear steel-toed boots.
Would you attempt to do this?

For reasons that cannot be explained, cats can suddenly read at a twelfth-grade level. They can't talk and they can't write, but they can read silently and understand the text. Many cats love this new skill, because they now have something to do all day while they lay around the house; however, a few cats become depressed, because reading forces them to realize the limitations of their existence (not to mention the utter frustration of being unable to express themselves).
This being the case, do you think the average cat would enjoy Garfield, or would cats find this cartoon to be an insulting caricature?

Imagine you could go back to the age of five and relive the rest of your life, knowing everything that you know now. You will reexperience your entire adolescence with both the cognitive ability of an adult and the memories of everything you've learned form having lived your life previously.
Would you lose your virginity earlier or later than you did the first time around (and by how many years)?

  3. I love reading these things too. We did one in high school that was really interesting:

20 men are in a submarine, and something goes wrong while they are submerged. Help won't arrive for a few days, and the sub only has enough oxygen for 5 people to live that long. The captain of the sub is the only one who knows about the danger, and poisons all everyone (including himself) except five of his crew. The five that he didn't poison have wives and children.

Do you agree with the captain's decision?

(I paraphrased from what I remembered)
