Sam Katz = Rick James

Lights, Camera, Action!  Cue Sam and Judy.

Yesterday's mayoral forum at RRC featuring incumbent Sam Katz and his opponent, Judy Wasylycia-Leis, was more of a pissing contest than a substantial discussion on political issues.

But I guess that's what politics really is: a glorified, over-the-top popularity contest.  Who has the whiter teeth?  Who's funnier?  Who's more of a charmer?

It's not even worth a conversation to debate about who won the, um, debate.  And I'm not going to get into how ridiculous the concept of "more police/community centres=less crime" is.

Katz is just more of a polished public figure than JWL.  It's sad though, because JWL is such a seasoned political figure.  She has a wealth of knowledge and experience (she's been in politics for over 20 years). She brought a dull, rusty Swiss-army knife to a gun fight, and tried, unsuccessfully, to trade barbs with Katz.

I brought baseball to Winnipeg.  I'm Sam Katz, bitch.

Other random thoughts...

As Katz announced his promise to put more police officers on the streets, I saw a cop walking on the sidewalk, just outside the windows behind the Mayor.  It felt like it was a tad more than a coincidence.

Katz is actually a legend.  He's hilarious, quick-witted and sarcastic.  I think he should quit the mayoral race, concede it all to JWL, and overthrow Garry Bettman as commissioner of the NHL.  I'm not even joking.  I think JWL is waaaaay more qualified to lead the city politically than Katz.  Katz is a businessman first, a politician second.  It's his most useful trait.  He'd have the intellect and acumen to market the game properly in the U.S., and he'd probably have an easy time putting a team in the MTS Centre.  Just saying.

I did a streeter assignment for The Projector this week, asking students if a) they're going to vote, and b) why or why not.  I then had to take their photo.  Not gonna lie, A LOT of students at the Princess St. campus could care less about the civic election.  It's sad but true.  The candidates aren't doing a good enough job reaching out to the 18-24 year old demographic.  It's hard to make politics cool, I guess.  Or maybe it's not.  Take President Barack Obama, for instance.  Barack IS The Man.  He's easily the smoothest operator around.  When Barack won the election in 2008, literally my whole Facebook news feed had status updates celebrating his victory.  He makes politics cool...because he is cool.  And that's really all that matters.

The most interesting experience I had with the election streeter was how down everyone was to have their photo taken.  I now understand how Joe Francis made, and lost, his millions.

Yesterday just may go down as one of the most important days in sports history.  Roy Halladay throws only the second no-hitter in MLB post-season history, and wide receiver Randy Moss is traded back to the team that originally drafted him, the Minnesota Vikings.  Just a mind blowing day on so many levels.   The whole thing deserves its own column here.
